FORCES & MOTION UNIT

We began with using reference points to write directions to our lockers and spent a week learning the math associated with calculating the speed of various objects, velocity, and acceleration. 



We made free-body diagrams to illustrate the effects of forces on motion, too.  We designed our own friction labs to develop some "rules" for understanding the relationship between the factors that affect the sliding friction force on objects. 

So, this week we are ready to master Newton's Laws of Motion and apply them to building our mouse-trap powered cars.

Today: We are pH testing a variety of substances using litmus paper and cabbage juice indicator solution.

Mixtures!

Due Today: Messin' with Mixtures lab

Use your Cornell Notes on Solutions and Solubility (text p.256-267) to help you identify the solutes and solvents in the lab and check with your table partner. 

Today, we will review the properties of mixtures and identify various household items as colloids, suspensions, or solutions.  Be prepared to defend your claim with observable evidence!

Elements, Compounds, Mixtures, Solutions, and Molecules

EQ: How are the properties of matter used to separate different substances in mixtures and solutions?

Log in to Google Classroom.  After examining the jar. Draw a diagram on IAN p.128.

Make a table and list of each of the materials it contains.  Describe the properties of each and the technique you would use to separate each unique substance.  Organize your notes on IAN p.129

Summarize by answering the Essential Question.

We are learning about the difference between mixtures and solutions.  Take notes on the illustrated sheet.

Next, we are reviewing how to read chemical formulas and counting atoms in molecules.  Illustrate the atoms that make up each molecule in on p.130.  Reading the formulas and balancing chemical equations will be next on p.131.

Periodic Table of Elements

We have watched a great video, Hunting the Elements and taken notes on the radioactive elements and synthetic elements.

We have color coded the family groups of elements on the table and reviewed the properties they have in common.

So now, we are working in groups to get to know a few elements that are representative of their family groups.

Once your group has finished the research, you will present this information to your peers.
 They will take the notes on their copies of the element "trading cards."

These will be used for you and your table partner to build a basic version of the periodic table to use for your partner quiz on Friday.
